Karen Bailey has captured, in portrait form, the radiant energy of six storytellers. The tellers perform personal stories while their second selves look on. The portraits offer one view of self-hood while the tellers’ own tales create another. Are the two representations of self in agreement?

Karen Bailey is a visual storyteller. Many of her paintings focus on those who work behind the scenes: servers, hairstylists, and church tea ladies. Through her representative style, she seeks to showcase beauty, honesty and most importantly, humanity.

Ottawa StoryTellers exists to promote the art of storytelling in our community, to nurture and inspire both beginning and experienced storytellers, and to provide tellers and listeners of all ages with opportunities to come together to share and enjoy stories. Storytelling is an oral art form, wherein the teller internalizes the story and then recreates it from memory, using voice and body to convey his or her understanding of the story’s meaning and nuances.
