“The Excess of HYPE” will explore the climax of celebration on a continuous loop. The looped process includes a conventional countdown to celebration with eruptions of sound, light and colour.”
In today’s bombardment of targeted stimulation it can be hard to make observations past the short-term. ‘HYPE’ promotes expectations that are seldom achievable, making us continually reach out to the next celebratory climax on the horizon. In this pursuit of our own satisfaction we rarely observe how repetitive our behavior can become.
‘The Excess of Hype’ allows the observer an opportunity to repeat the climax of celebration in a condensed format through a consistent loop of the experience. By saturating their environment with the build-up, release and recovery characteristic of the ‘hype cycle’ new perspectives are accessed. The result allows a greater understanding of our actions, facilitating an internal conversation on how we balance conflicting personal, societal and environmental interests. This is especially relevant in our time of international celebrations, such as the World Cup and Olympics, which have major impacts at both localized and global scales.
