Description: Bonus Track is an L-shaped installation constructed of steel scaffolding and is covered by translucent sheeting that functions to create a ‘light box’ effect and cast shadows of people inside.
Bonus Track aims to capture the moment of discovery, disillusionment and possibility. In illuminating a corner of the city at night by creating a surreal environment with ambient sounds, lighting, and fog, while masking the vacant lot behind, Bonus Track draws people in and casts a space in the city in a new light. The anticipation of encountering and experiencing something unique generates individual and collective stimulation and hype. Therein lies disillusionment, but with a twist. Behind the installation, which mimics the scaffolding of a construction site, is nothing but an empty lot—all the hype for nothing! By initiating a rupture of the ordinary and bringing the vacant lot out of the everyday into the surreal, a new sense of meaning and possibility arises. Transcending the boundaries of this city by acting as a metaphor for the condition of other cities, Bonus Track turns our focus to the oft neglected spaces of the city; such a notion surely remains HYPE.
